International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) Inaugural Australian Designer Member interview of GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen, 2019:
The document above is an interview excerpt with Gary Olsson of GN Olsson Mastercraftsmen, highlighting his expertise in traditional craftsmanship and design. It emphasises the use of premium materials and bespoke commission work, including furniture, clocks, and various commissioned pieces that are described as heirlooms and embody a high standard of craftsmanship. Gary Olsson’s philosophy is that if a job is worth doing, it should be done well, with the imagination being the only limit to creation.
It describes Olsson’s background and training, including an apprenticeship and tutelage under Elvin Harvey of the Harvey School, which influenced his classical design approach and his signature embellishments in his work. Olsson bespoke pieces are noted for ergonomics, functionality, clean lines and classic proportions, often incorporating textile, leather, glass and metal ornamentation. Uniquely, always thinking ahead, Olsson incorporates design features to optimise ease and efficiency of future removals, restoration, climate resilience, maintenance and housekeeping.
The document touches on Olsson’s passion for antique stewardship and the design challenge of ensuring objects of today will be appreciated in the future. It also mentions the importance of the practical aspects of artisan design and the ethical considerations in sourcing and recycling of materials.
Gary Olsson is a meticulous designer and craftsman who values the interplay between design, functionality, and the legacy of craftsmanship.
